Kindergarten Speech & Language Screenings

Concerned about your child’s speech or language before school starts?

If you’ve noticed your child is hard to understand, not using as many words as others, struggling to follow directions, or their kinder has raised concerns — you’re not alone.

Our Kindergarten Screening Appointments are a simple, supportive first step to help you understand whether your child’s communication skills are developing as expected.

A screening is a short appointment designed to give you clarity.

We look at your child’s speech, language and early literacy skills to see whether things are on track, or whether extra support might be helpful.

It’s not a full assessment — it’s a gentle starting point for families who are unsure what to do next.

What is a Kindergarten Screening?

Your child’s screening will explore:

  • How clearly your child speaks

  • Understanding of language (following directions, answering questions)

  • Use of words, sentences and vocabulary

  • Social communication and participation

What can it help with?

This appointment is a great fit if:

  • You’re unsure if your child’s speech or language is typical for their age

  • Your child’s kinder or teacher has mentioned concerns

  • Your child is starting school soon and you’d like reassurance

  • You’ve noticed your child gets frustrated when communicating

  • If your child is aged between 3 and 5 years.

Is this right for my child?

At the end of the session, we’ll talk you through what we’ve observed and what it means.

You’ll leave with clear next steps, which may include:

  • Reassurance and simple strategies to support your child at home

  • Monitoring development over time

  • A recommendation for a full assessment (if needed)

  • Therapy support options

Following the session, you’ll receive a written summary of screening findings.

What happens after the screening?

A Kindergarten Screening Appointment is $120.

This includes a dedicated 30-minute session with one of our speech pathologists, along with clear written feedback and next steps for your child.

With a valid GP referral, eligible families may be able to claim $61.80 back from Medicare.

Investment

A Kindergarten Screening is a short, focused appointment designed to give you an initial understanding of your child’s communication skills.

It helps answer the question:
“Is my child on track, or should we look into this further?”

A full assessment, on the other hand, is a more in-depth session that provides a detailed understanding of your child’s strengths and areas of need.

Screening (20–30 minutes):

  • A quick check of speech and language skills

  • Identifies whether concerns may be present

  • Provides immediate feedback and recommendations

  • A great first step if you’re unsure

Comprehensive Assessment (60–90+ minutes):

  • A detailed evaluation using standardised and informal tools

  • Identifies specific strengths and challenges

  • Includes a comprehensive written report

  • Used for therapy planning, school support, or diagnosis

How is this different from a full assessment?
