What to Expect in Your Child’s First Speech Therapy Session at Sprout Learning

If you’ve booked your child’s first speech therapy session, you might be wondering what to expect. Whether your child is a late talker, has difficulty pronouncing sounds, or needs support with communication, this first appointment is an important step towards helping them thrive.

At Sprout Learning, we know that starting therapy can feel overwhelming for both parents and children. That’s why we take a friendly, relaxed, and neurodiversity-affirming approach—supporting every child’s unique communication style and strengths.

A Warm Welcome

When you arrive at our clinic, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team in a calm, child-friendly environment. We want your child to feel safe and comfortable, so there’s no pressure to perform or talk straight away. If your child prefers to observe, play, or take their time warming up, that’s completely okay.

Getting to Know Your Child

The first session is all about understanding your child’s strengths and needs. We’ll chat with you about your child’s strengths, challenges, interests, and daily routines. This helps us create a plan that fits your child’s world, not the other way around.

Your child might engage in:

  • Play-based activities (for younger children)

  • Fun, interactive tasks to explore speech sounds and language skills

  • Observations of how they communicate—whether that’s through speech, gestures, signing, or other forms of communication

  • Standardised assessment may be completed depending on your child’s needs and whether they are regulated and ready for this.

We celebrate all communication, including spoken words, gestures, sign language, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication),. Whatever helps your child express themselves best.

A No-Pressure Approach

There is no pass or fail, and no need to “prove” anything in the first session. If your child prefers to explore the space, play with toys, or stay close to you, that’s completely fine. We take a child-led approach, allowing them to engage at their own pace.

Discussing Next Steps

At the end of the session, we’ll share our observations and discuss:
Your child’s strengths and areas where they might need support
- Whether further assessment is required - Personalised therapy goals based on their needs and interests
- Practical strategies you can use at home to support their communication

If therapy is recommended, we’ll outline a plan that fits your family’s schedule and priorities.

Every Child Communicates in Their Own Way

At Sprout Learning, we believe that communication is more than just speech—it’s about connection. Whether your child speaks, signs, uses a communication device, or prefers non-speaking interactions, we celebrate their unique way of engaging with the world.

We’re here to empower your child and support your family on this journey. If you’re ready to start speech therapy in a welcoming, supportive environment, contact us today, we’d love to help!
